
Open Water Course
The SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course is designed to introduce new divers to the underwater world in a safe, fun, and structured way. This entry-level certification course focuses on building confidence, mastering fundamental dive skills, and understanding the core principles of scuba diving—laying the foundation for a lifetime of underwater adventure.
The course will be done in a pool or confined water area and ocean diving on the local reefs, offering stunning visibility and good conditions ideal for training.
Course Topics Include:
Introduction to scuba diving equipment and safe diving practices
Basic dive physics and physiology
Underwater communication and buddy procedures
Entry-level buoyancy control, trim, and breathing techniques
Equalization, descent/ascent procedures, and controlled emergency swimming ascents (CESA)
Mask clearing, regulator recovery, and other essential in-water skills
Dive planning, depth limits, and environmental awareness
Course Structure:
Academic Sessions: Covering dive theory, safety protocols, pressure effects, and equipment usage
Confined Water Training: Focused on learning and practicing skills in a controlled shallow water setting
Open Water Dives: Typically 4 dives in cenotes and ocean environments to apply skills and gain real-world experience
Prerequisites:
Minimum age: 10 years old
Basic swimming ability and comfort in the water
No prior scuba experience required
Certification Outcome:
Upon successful completion, divers will earn the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver certification, allowing them to dive to a maximum depth of 18 meters/60 feet with a buddy. This certification is recognized worldwide and serves as the starting point for continuing education. Recommended add on courses are Advanced Adventurer, Enriched Air Nitrox, and Advanced Buoyancy Control.
