Advanced Buoyancy Control Course
The SDI Advanced Buoyancy Control course is designed to help divers refine one of the most critical underwater skills: buoyancy. This course focuses on improving trim, breathing techniques, and body positioning to enhance control, efficiency, and confidence underwater—setting the stage for safer, more enjoyable dives at any level.
The course will be done with a mixture of cenote diving at beautiful sites like Garden of Eden, just 20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen, and ocean diving on the local reefs, providing the perfect environment for buoyancy-focused training.
Course Topics Include:
Proper weighting and weight distribution
Breathing control and lung volume awareness
Streamlined positioning and body posture
Trim and balance techniques for optimal control
Propulsion techniques including frog kick, modified flutter, and back kick
Hovering in multiple positions (horizontal, vertical, head-down)
Environmental awareness and control in sensitive ecosystems
Course Structure:
Academic Sessions: Covering the physics of buoyancy, proper weighting, and theory behind efficient diving
Open Water Dives: Typically 2–4 dives in cenotes and ocean sites, emphasizing real-world buoyancy practice and mastery
Prerequisites:
Minimum age: 15 years old
Minimum certification: SDI Open Water Scuba Diver or equivalent
Certification Outcome:
By the end of the course, divers will have greater confidence in their underwater control, reduced gas consumption, and improved safety and comfort during all types of dives. This course is ideal for any diver wanting to improve their technique and is highly recommended before moving into technical, wreck, or cavern diving.
