Nitrox Diver Speciality Course

The SDI Enriched Air Nitrox course is a great course to give divers the knowledge and skills needed to safely dive using breathing gas mixtures with higher oxygen content than air. Diving with nitrox can increase your bottom time, reduce nitrogen loading, and enhance overall safety—making it a valuable addition to any diver’s skill set.

The course can be completed as a dry, classroom-based certification which makes it perfect to combine with any course or even on fun dives, for practical application and hands-on learning.

Course Topics Include:

  • Understanding oxygen exposure and maximum operating depth (MOD)

  • Benefits and risks of diving with nitrox

  • Analyzing and labeling nitrox cylinders

  • Proper dive planning using nitrox

  • How to use nitrox dive computers and tables

  • Gas blending theory and safety considerations (overview)

  • Common myths and misconceptions about enriched air

Course Structure:

  • Academic Sessions: Focused on oxygen physiology, gas analysis procedures, and dive planning with enriched air

  • Optional Dives: 2 nitrox dives may be included for hands-on experience using EAN32 or EAN36

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age: 15 years old

  • Minimum certification: SDI Open Water Scuba Diver or equivalent

Certification Outcome:
By the end of the course, divers will be certified to use nitrox mixtures up to 40% oxygen. This certification increases dive safety and is especially useful for repetitive diving, liveaboards, and travel.
