
SDI Solo Diver Course
The SDI Solo Diver course is for experienced divers who want to develop the skills and mindset necessary for self-reliant diving. This advanced-level certification focuses on dive planning, risk management, and the use of redundant equipment—empowering divers to safely dive alone or take more responsibility within a buddy team.
The course will be done in cenotes and ocean environments around Playa del Carmen, offering controlled yet varied conditions that are ideal for practicing self-reliant diving techniques.
Course Topics Include:
Dive planning and gas management for solo dives
Redundant equipment configuration and usage
Navigation techniques and situational awareness
Self-rescue procedures and emergency protocols
Risk assessment and dive limitation evaluation
Surface support considerations for solo diving
Psychological aspects of diving alone
Course Structure:
Academic Sessions: Covering the philosophy of self-reliance, equipment setup, and safety planning
Confined & Open Water Dives: Typically 2–3 training dives focusing on redundancy, navigation, and emergency response under direct supervision
Prerequisites:
Minimum age: 21 years old
Minimum certification: SDI Advanced Adventure Diver or equivalent
Minimum of 100 logged dives
Certification Outcome:
Upon successful completion, divers will earn the SDI Solo Diver certification, allowing them to conduct solo dives using proper self-reliant techniques and redundant gear. This course is ideal for underwater photographers, dive professionals, or anyone seeking greater independence and confidence underwater. Recommended follow-up courses include Deep Diver, TDI Sidemount Diver, and TDI Intro to Tech.
