SDI Sidemount Diver Course
The SDI Sidemount Diver course introduces certified divers to the sidemount equipment configuration, a versatile setup where tanks are worn at the sides rather than on the back. This course focuses on improving balance, streamlining, and dive efficiency while increasing comfort and accessibility to equipment—making it ideal for both recreational and advanced divers.
The course will be done in a pool or confined water area and cenote or ocean environments around Playa del Carmen, offering perfect conditions for training and mastering the sidemount configuration.
Course Topics Include:
Introduction to sidemount diving and its benefits
Sidemount equipment components, setup, and configuration
Buoyancy control, trim, and body positioning in sidemount
Gas management and regulator switching procedures
Donning and doffing tanks in and out of the water
Problem-solving and self-reliant diving techniques
Dive planning, safety protocols, and environmental awareness
Course Structure:
Academic Sessions: Covering sidemount philosophy, equipment setup, gas management, and dive planning
Confined Water Training: Focused on skill development, gear familiarization, and buoyancy control
Open Water Dives: Typically 2–4 dives in cenotes or ocean sites to practice and refine sidemount diving skills
Prerequisites:
Minimum age: 15 years old
Minimum certification: SDI Open Water Scuba Diver or equivalent
Basic comfort in the water and solid buoyancy control recommended
Certification Outcome:
Upon successful completion, divers will earn the SDI Sidemount Diver certification, allowing them to plan and execute dives using sidemount gear for single or dual tank configurations. This course serves as an excellent foundation for further training in cavern, cave, and technical diving. Recommended follow up courses include TDI Sidemount with just a day extra of training and then there after the Cavern Diver Course.
